Lettie Thomas
I’m Lettie and I help transcriptionists go from freelancers to small business owners so they can earn more money and have more control over work/life balance. In 2010, I started freelancing as a transcriptionist. Four years later, I started my own transcription company, which is still going strong today. I started this blog, Tips for Transcribers because I’m passionate about sharing everything I’ve learned along the way. Your journey from freelancer to small business owner starts here!
My Story
In 2010, while working in the demanding world of financial services, I made a pivotal decision that would forever transform my career and my life. Fueled by the desire for greater control over my income and a more harmonious work/life balance, I ventured into the realm of freelance transcription. This decision was my first step on a path to making more money while working fewer hours and affording me precious moments with my children.
Challenges & Obstacles
At the outset of my journey, I faced a landscape filled with challenges that seemed insurmountable. I embarked on a path less traveled, one where family and friends doubted the viability of my dream, where role models and mentors were scarce, where work-from-home technology was limited, and trust in existing technologies was a rarity. To many, the notion of working from home was dismissed as a mere hobby, far removed from the realm of professionals. I was met with skepticism from those closest to me but I refused to let doubt deter me. With unwavering determination, I set out to prove that my dream was not just a whim but a legitimate pursuit. One of the most daunting aspects of my journey was the lack of role models and mentors who could guide me along this uncharted route. I became my own mentor, learning from every experience and growing with every setback. This led to my passion to mentor other freelance transcriptionists who truly want to be successful in their career.
Limited access to work-from-home technology and skepticism toward existing tools like Zoom and DocuSign, which were brand new at the time, could have been stumbling blocks. However, I invested time and effort in mastering the available technology and gradually built my my company around these tools. Additionally, the perception at that time was that transcription was a side gig and any type of work done from home was a hobby, not a professional endeavor. I was determined to dispel these notions, so I channeled my passion into a profession, demonstrating that remote work could be a thriving and respected career. As I forged my path, I inspired others to recognize the potential of this lifestyle.
Success & Achievements
Fast forward to the present and I can recount some of the most remarkable milestones on this journey. I set ambitious 5-year goals and achieved them in just three years, which is now a testament to my dedication and expertise in this field. My very first client, who believed in my skills from day one remained with me for a decade. Their loyalty speaks to the quality of my work and my commitment to excellence. My passion for sharing what I’ve learned has not only led to my success but also the success of others. As my business grew and I started hiring, I had the privilege of training a new generation of freelance transcriptionists. I take immense pride in seeing the freelance transcriptionists I’ve trained embark on their own successful careers. These moments, marked by expertise and a passion for mentorship, define my entrepreneurial odyssey.
